🧱🧠Building Stronger Minds: ELCON Tackles Mental Health in the Elevator & Construction Industries️️
This week, our team took a groundbreaking step toward safeguarding mental health by completing a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification course. In industries where physical safety is paramount, we’re now equally equipped to protect mental well-being—a critical need given the alarmingly high rates of suicide in our fields. A HUGE thank you to the speakers with Mental Health First Aid USA! Matt Rusch, Abel Arabitg, and Vernon Soeder of the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund - EIWPF shared their personal experiences with mental health challenges and made an uncomfortable topic more comfortable for us all.
❓Why It Matters
Construction workers face suicide rates 4–5 times higher than the national average, and elevator
installers/repairers are among the most high-risk trades due to intense pressure, demanding schedules,
and workplace isolation. Mental health first aid isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it’s a lifesaving skill.
This training empowers us to recognize crises, intervene early, and support our colleagues in an
industry where “toughing it out” has too often been the norm.
đź’ˇWhat We Learned
The MHFA certification equipped us with tools tailored to high-stakes environments:
🔹 Spotting Silent Struggles: Identifying signs of anxiety, depression, or burnout in physically demanding, high-risk workplaces.
🔹 Breaking Down Barriers: Addressing stigma in industries where mental health is rarely discussed.
🔹 Crisis Response: Safely supporting someone in distress, whether on a jobsite or in the office.
🔹 Connecting to Help: Guiding colleagues toward resources, from Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to crisis hotlines.
🗝️Key Takeaways
âś… Silence Costs Lives: Suicide is the #2 cause of death in construction. By speaking up, we can save peers.
âś… Safety Goes Beyond Hard Hats: Mental health is just as critical as physical safety in preventing accidents and saving lives.
✅ Culture Shift Starts Here: We’re proud to lead change in industries where mental health has been overlooked for too long.
🤝Join the Movement
To fellow construction and elevator industry leaders: Let’s make mental health training as standard
as OSHA certifications. Together, we can reduce suicide rates and ensure our teams come home safe—body and mind. 💙
